Dead Animals

Last week we ran this story on the sealions found dead on the Colán beach in northern Peru. This morning El Comercio reports the press conference held by Minister of Production (oh the irony) Mercedes Araoz who confirmed the obvious; the 263 dead animals had been poisoned. The method was to feed them fish laced with rat poison and the culprits were undoubtedly small fishermen that work out of the local harbour.

Sit this story alongside the recent one about the Mining Minister who refuses to control the sale of mercury inside Peru while condemning the artisanal mining in Madre de Dios that is wreaking environmental havoc. Spot any pattern yet?
